Post subject:  Solid engine mounts are next :)

The MGB and Rover V8 combo has done well in the last 2 months. She's now running solid 9's on the 1/4 mile.

I have fitted engine steady bars to the front and rear of the nearside cylinder head. These stop the engine rolling over under power. But the stock rubber mounts are now a problem. I dont see this problem when racing. But a mate stuck his GoPro cam on my roof for one of my 9 second runs at the Pod at Retro Show. I'm glad he did because it showed up another problem that I need to sort out.

My local machine shop has copied some new rubber mounts in steel so I can fit them next week before I hit the Pod next Saturday.

I'm AMAZED that you've managed to run quicker than even 12s without solid mountings, as I'd expect the torque required to run such times to rip the stock ones apart.

The stock mounts are not in good nick Trev, even though they are only 6 months old :)
They are not torn, but they are mis shaped now !!

The solid mounts are now fitted and the two steady bars are nipped up tight. When I run the engine it stays perfectly still now. I cant feel any undue vibrations which is good. But it does make the car feel like its more responsive to the throttle now. I guess because there is no slop in the engine mounts now eh?

I'm out again tomorrow to see how she behaves ;)

It should be entirely different now, at least on the launch and possibly at the shifts.

YEP!
Its different now 8)

I only got one proper pass in due to lots of other issues. When I eventually got to the front of the queue for this run I had been in the queue for over 2 hours in the hot sun. I was busy with the other car at this time so when it was my turn i didnt check the tyres. Drivers side rear had heated up by 3psi to 15psi. So it didnt dig in and grip like the other rear tyre. So when the front went light she tried to push the front of the car to the right. It wasnt a big drama but it did take me by surprise. I also had what sounded like a misfire at the top of 1st and 2nd gears which cleared in 3rd gear?

Then I realised that in 3rd gear I wasnt reaching 6000rpm when the misfire appeared in 1st and 2nd.

But she still reeled in a 9.8 even though the mph was slow. Back in the pits I found that the rubber cap on the brake servo tapping on the carb had split and was leaking air :)

Just before the run the engine was idling with a hunting in the revs. This indicates and air leak as I've had this before when the carb bolts were loose.

I'm happy with the 9.8 to be honest.

I've fixed the leaky rubber cap and will be out next Sunday for another go at the 9.79 pass 8)
