In south of london. Closest one is Torque of the Devil I believe (in Uxbridge), but filling up is a nightmare on saturdays as they insist you be there for 8:30am!

Sab!
Its only an hour from sarf London to Chris's place in Uxbridge.!!

Just hang about at TOFD and watch what they are doing while you wait for a top up. Chris will no doubt have some serious motors on the rollers for you to watch as he dyno's them :)

If you get really stuck I'll have 6 bottles in the truck on Sunday just in case I can get a full power pass. I'll lend you a bottle with enough in for some test runs for the cost of the gas.

How much gas are you sticking into the car??

Perry

Just going to be putting 11lb in. Should do me fine for a few runs.
He doesn't seem to like filling up bottles on Saturdays. Fair dues, he's busy dyno'ing all those motors.

I'm planning for the worst :beatstick:
Beamer has started to puff blue smoke on start-up from both banks,
so I've prepared my engine re-builder should it go tits up.

Should this happen, I'll take advise form Trev the Master and order something more robust for the job, forged pistons etc.

Either way the weekend should be spectacular
I encouraged Viv to do some more test runs and I have to take the blame for it overreving slightly, as I forgot to inhibit the kickdown, so thats probably whats weakened something.

It still runs like a dream, dispite the smoke screen on start-up
I really want Viv to do 13's @ 100+

Rich

Are you sure its not oil from a breather? If I remember correctly your breathers are standard.

The breathers will drop garbage from the bottom end into the inlet somewhere and with a warm engine you wont see it but on a cold engine you can see it - a load of blue smoke - sometimes its just sat ready for startup.

Especially if you've been 'thrashing' it - oops sorry - 'testing' it

If its puffing a bit of smoke. At least you know you have oil getting to a slightly worn component eh?

Just get it there so we can give it the beans :)

Thats very true mate, and compressions are ALL ok, I guess it could just be a valve stem seal or two.
It only puffs on start-up, running is fine, but we'll see at the weekend :D

Forecast is showers saturday, clear sunday, temp 14C
Was hoping to set our times on Saturday and watch on Sunday, but that forecast may change that.
Times on both days count.

Hi Rich

If you're only seeing blue smoke on start up then most likely is your positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Common problem on both the 840 and 850. Worn valve stem seals you'll see blue smoke on acceleration and deceleration after the car sits idle for a couple minutes.
Cheers
Hadi

Thanks Hadi, thats comforting to know about the PCV.
As apart from the smoke on start-up, its running like a dream.
I hope to post some good times after the weekend.
Rich.

Shvt Perry what you been upto now. melting plugs & HG's you sure your fuel pulsoid is connected or even in engine bay... looks like serious heat was generated!

I'll be down Sunday, looks like best day so be down 10ish to make most of it :) Gotta do some work on car tomorrow, missing a little so new to test nitrous & fuel pulsiods and not bottling out and certain frequencies. Just doesn't seem same power with this latest 82lb bottle of nitrous i'm using to refill.... Then again might be because got used to power of Evo FQ-360MR over winter months  ...

Anyway will catch up Sunday 8) Enjoy!

Update on today!!!

I spent 5 hours getting the top back on the engine in the pits in the bloody rain.
Luckily the usual suspects turned up to help. That was Richard BMW840, Ian Oddie, Stevie Skoda, Stevie Rover, and anew mate we met today, alan with his spanky Soarer!!
What a sweet motor that is dude. Hope to see you on here soon after all the "you need a 50 wet shot on this car mate" from me and Richard.

So in the rain we managed to get the top back on the engine, get all the induction system, alternator and all the pipes and wires bsack on. New oil and filter ( I wont say what came out when we pulled the sump plug after last weeks failure) fresh coolant.
Compression test wasnt too good really. 7 cylinders hopping around the 145-150psi mark. But number 6 where all the damage happened a couple of weeks back was down at 90psi. But I think now the engine has been run for about 20 mins I will find that the compression on 6 will be better tomorrow.

Then we set to work on the holley 600dp. After a good while we seemed to get the right jet and squirter combo. I ended up increasing the secondary squirter about 7 sizes in the end. By this time we were working in the dark with torches.

There is still a super small hesitaton as the secondaries flip open. I noticed it. Nobody else did. But then, I know my engine and can hear beyond the open pipes.
Me and the boys then went on to do 6 static tests with the spifder plate. But sommat is wrong in a big way. I dont know what it is yet. But I'll be back at the track at 7.15 am waiting for the gates to open so I can wake up some mater with more static tests.

I'll post the static test query on another Spider plate thread in the general section.

I'll also try a bit bigger squirter tomorrow as I gave up as 7pm. Soaked to the skin and getting cold.

I'm now back in my bedroom with all my wet clothes chucked in the basket. Gill has furnished me with a few cold tinnies and the Chinese has just arrived :)

All in al it was a good day today, even though it was actually a rain off and nobody ran the strip. This is a good thing. Because it means I get in free on the next RWYB

Sunday was a success. Despite everything being against me getting a run in??

The biggest delay engine wise was trying to static test the spider on my engine / carb / manifold setup. I know Trev is going to come on soon and shoot me down in flames. But the fact is the static testing made no sense at all. Luckily I had Ian Oddie on one side and Austin on the other side. Both just as confused as me??

The holley 600dp is now working ok. I can idle and stamp the pedal to launch the car with no bogging.

The static test story is too long to tell now. But the best I could get was 2000rpm idle. hit the switch and it revved steadily without a splutter up to 4900-5000rpm. At which point it was faultering.

To achieve this I had to go nearly 3:1 fuel to nitrous ratio which i know is too rich.
My guess is that the carb will be the reason for the static test not working.

Long story short. After doing extensive flow testing I knew the results of the static test were rubbish and could not be relied upon. I knew what gas and fuel the system would flow.
I started at 300hp for the first fuel flow test. 6psi gave 340ml in 10 seconds. At 10psi it made 350ml in 10 seconds.
I went to the other end of the scale and tested a 50hp setup. This flowed 90ml in 10 seconds. All flow tests were done through the spider into a measuring flask by the way.

Anyroad up!
I fitted 100 gas and 150 fuel and was hoping to see a smoky run. This is exactly what happened. I ended up with 225 of gas and 250 of fuel and it smoothed out nicely. As it was getting dark by the time we did the last 2 passes the lads could see the flame plumes from the side pipes. On the last run they were about 12" and had an orangey glow to them. On my last setup i got these plumes to a nice blue colour when all was set up properly. so i think I can still lean it out a bit more yet.

Its on the rollers next Saturday anyway. So I shall have some more fiddlng then.

Now this is the but I'm having trouble with...nitrous has such a fast burn that we have to retard timing...but it's still burning out the pipes :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: on petrol that is so wrong :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: no wonder when you get it wrong with nitrous you do so much damage so quickly... petrol combustion could be 2000c do that to a turbo it'd melt!

Glad everything held together Pel,done a leakdown or compression test since?

Nige! Check out the last run on this vid mate. Its not just due to me running open headers and short pipes. For this pass I had 8 feet of extension tubes on each side, and she still lit up.? But a nice blue and not orange. This was on the crossfire plate.

Yep! I looked at the joint between the block and head and I cant see anythning leaking so I guess thats ok :)
I will do a comp test before it goes on the dyno next Saturday. I should have 7 at 150psi and one just over a 100 psi which is cool :)

It sure is. Its Tig weld in a tube mate :)

Austn and Ian oddie made sure they kept me busy in the pits titting around with flow testing so Austin could go and get some runs in before 4pm.....That meant my sub 12.4 runs were void :beatstick:

I'm only joking lads!!
Austin must be shy??
I had to drag him down to claim his trophy

I even got Carole to get on the radio to call the guy in to present it to him !!
