Yes well - I though the idea was to put the stuff on the car, not snort it! Must be why Dave only went for the stripes and didnt paint the whole car. :P

Actually Dave that doesnt look too bad - but when you gonna do the IMPORTANT stuff - like make it GO!!!!

Making it go........well I have a plan!

I have a few bits lying around that mean I can get nitrous on it fairly quickly.........but I dont want to do that yet :)

I have been playing with an electric turbo as you know and |I have been developing a control strategy.

I have an electronic boost gauge that outputs a 0-5v signal that I can use with a Velleman 8055 card. This will allow me to monitor boost. The card can also have another analogue input, so I will probably monitor rpm as well. I can also have 8 digital inputs, and as a minimum I will use a throttle switch. On the output side I get a 0-5v output that I can use to drive the motor controller giving me fine control of the speed, with a bit of feedback I can therefore control the boost to a set point  The other output I will use to drive a PWM board to fire an extra injector to give the required extra fuel under boost. All this is software controlled and I can easily program what I want.

So I will have boost only at full throttle (or 80% or whenever) and I can set my target boost and the software will hold it by altering the speed of the motor. Simples!

The extra outputs on the card can control the nitrous if I so desire.

i had a look at the Velleman card, does it use software running on the pc or laptop as the program?
the velleman card is just used as an i/o board?
didnt see any mention of a plc, so im guessing it doesnt have one?

It will require a laptop in the car.......but that is not really an issue :)

I like it.
At first I thought it was vinyl panels as a guy here in Guildford has covered his Porsche in Carbon Fibre lookalike,
until he opens the doors and its still bright orange :beatstick:

Rattle cans!!!!!!! is this the stuff surveyors use to mark the roads?

You have hit the nail on the head - this is a bit of a p!$$ take car, part of my therapy if you will! It is about not taking things seriously, it is about having fun and being able to laugh at yourself.

Sure I am hoping to make it a bit swifter........but at the end of the day it was £250 and still only owes me £400 or so. Bloody cheap therapy in anyones book!!!

:omgrofl: Yup - should have been at the Fast show with that Dave!

Mind you you also need a 12 inch exhaust and sub woofers that will stick out the boot.
(Not Moo's 1000hp Boom tube - One without a bottle)

Have you been hanging out at the barryboys site?

OK, so some mechanical progress

Stripped the turbo and took the turbine shaft to my machinist for him to turn the turbine off and create a shaft for the gear I will be using. Turns out his tools just 'bounced' off the turbine as it is super hard! So instead he made me a new shaft

Image

The top one is the new shaft and the bottom one is the old one that was brutalised with a lathe and grinding wheel before giving up!

Here is the new shaft with the gear on it.

Image

and now the interesting bit! This is a TD05H turbo and the motor I will be using to drive it. The numbers on the motor identify its size (80mm diameter and 85mm length) and the speed rating (170rpm per volt). With 24V this will give 4000rpm at the motor and a 10:1 ration will mean the turbo will hit 40,000rpm at full chat. If that turns out not to be enough I can go up to 40V. The motor is rated up to 200A which gives a power output of up to 8kw!! Should be enough!

http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs499.snc3/27255_10150153612260150_606855149_11859391_8081268_n.jpg

Now all I need to do is figure out how to mount the motor to the turbo!! Any ideas welcome!

Big Dave!!

Is there room for the motor to be mounted alongside the turbo?

So both drive shafts face the same way, if you see what I mean. The bracket would look like a pair of binoculars if that makes sense :)

If that dont work, I can recommend JB weld

They could be mounted alongside one another if I use an idler gear........which could be an option.

I have just ordered an idler gear - should make things a bit easier!

Just need to design a plate to atatch to the cartridge now and house the bearings for the idler gear. I may also have to enclose the gears, not so keen on them spinning at 40,000rpm!!

Very interesting Dave. Nice looking electric motor, don't suppose that was cheap?

My only worry is that the turbo's plain bearings won't like the thrust load placed on them by the drive method.Might be worth fitting a decent/ballbearing at the drive end??

How quick does the motor spin up?

i had that thought about the bearings too, the load is in the direction of the shaft, hence thrust bearings
depends on how much the turbos are really, if there peanuts its no biggie
the other thing is, i thought turbos spin at around 80000-100000rpms?

the side by side arangement in a twin tube setup would look like a real supercharger 8)
