The motor was $100, the controller was $200 and the batteries $100...........but I had them lying around from another project!!

I am all ready looking in to ceramic ball bearings, but this turbo only cost me £10!!

The motor spins up really quickly and while it may only reach half the rpm of a normal turbo, this turbo is much bigger than required so I reckon that half the rpm will be fine. Also I am only looking for 5 or 6 psi rather than the 20 that it is capable of.

Dave

With the Idler you could possibly increase the gearing again?

Are you feeding oil to the turbo?

The other thing would be to extend the turbo shaft and put a bearing above the drive as well - supporting the shaft both sides of the drive. (had a similar problem with the motor on a green power car using chain drive)

I could increase the gearing, but at this stage I dont think it will be required. I guess I need to get it working first out of the car.

I will be feeding oil to it, although I had considered filling it with oil and plugging it..........

Extending the shaft is an option, my machine man can do anything!! I have also considered belt drive which would be easier and involve much lighter components.

In experimental stages at the moment so anything goes!

If you fill with oil and plug it will creep out through the bearings.................. (got a turbo that does that - SMOKY!)

You would deffo have to support the shaft with a belt drive but the belt would be more likely to slip. As an opinion I think the gear drive is better and would put less sideways force on the motor and shaft. (also easier to keep things closer together)
 I do so love this sort of engineering - MIMS rather than OBE

For me 90% of the fun is the tinkering........the other 10% is the results.

I would NEVER pay anyone to do mods, it is much more fun to break stuff yourself! Not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper!

plus less embarrassing
good luck with it, its a great idea :)

it should be possible to buy an electric motor that will spin in the range you require direct drive?
wouldnt it make life a lot simpler as the only load issue would be controlling thrust off the motor shaft?

this is going to be a cost issue isnt it :D

Well I couldn't resist.................

I have now fitted my trusty POS generic system to the MX5!! Still a few bits to finish off and I need to dig the HUGE bottle out of the garage to fill my 10lb bottle up!

The DIY bottle heater is wired up with one of Trevs pressure switches and protected by a SPRV.

Then I have 10' of braided line to the solenoid with a solenoid mounted jet.

Then nylon pipe to a fogger with quick release connectors.

The fuel system is similar.

Need to mount the micro switch to the throttle and I am away!

Pics to follow

The box containing the solenoids and the relay......all neat and tidy! The solenoids have been modified so the jets go on the inlet rather than at the injector.

I also dug out my BIG bottle from the garage and 'filled' the bottle. Probably not very full, but enough for a test squirt on the 25bhp jets 8)

Is that bottle the right way up Big Dave!
Outlet appears to be at the top? Does it have a normal dip tube?

First tests complete  :bounce:

The 25bhp jets will be swapped this evening for 40bhp............

The bottle heater circuit is working, I turned the heater on 30 mins before leaving home and on my way in to work I checked the bottle.......it was warm, but not burning hot like it was when I tried it empty! This tells me it is cutting off at pressure as desired.

So I proceeded to a 3rd gear test.........Found a nice stretch of test track, dropped it in to 3rd at 3000rpm and floored it. Shortly after this I hit the activation switch and noticed a distinct change in acceleration. It was quite mild but noticable.

Then on to the standing start test through 1st and 2nd.......yep that works

I dont have any figures, as I left the GTech at home on purpose as this was just a shakedown test.

More to come

hahahahahahahahaha

hahahahahahahahaha

OK, 40bhp test conducted!!

It was a bit damp so I didn't nail it in 1st gear, so no nitrous. I grabbed a handful of 2nd and nailed it. Wow awesome for about 1000rpm, and then the redline approached with no associated gathering of momentum!

Grabbed 3rd and nailed it again

:omgrofl:

It would appear that the clutch is not especially happy with a 35% power hike! The engine sounded lovely though! At least I assume it was the clutch and not the rear wheels as I had no loss of traction or snaking.

I think I need to have a bit of a think!

:loser:
