So it really is true,TVRs are reverse kit cars.

Every time you out to the garage another bit has fallen off.

Sorry couldn't help it,Such a nice looking chassis why did they make it out of cheese?

I used to do body repairs for a TVR dealer, the biggest problem we had was that our repairs would be the flattest smoothest parts on the body, making them stand out something rotten.

i got kicked out of a tvr dealership (quite literally) when i pointed out that tvrs are kit cars
they started as kit cars originallly being sold as kits

as its all mild steel and straight pipes it shouldnt be too much of a drama should it?
it does suck for a 13yr old car though, good luck with it

I wish my MG had a separate chassis like that. Well, not actually like Dereks, but you know what I mean eh?

I could have a selection of body shells to drop onto the running gear. That way I could attend MG meets, Triumph meets etc etc....How cool would that be? A driving chassis that you can put different bodies on. :D
Food for thought eh? A kit car manufacturer could make a killing. A generic chassis with choice of drop-on bodies!

DAMN!

That taint galvanized that chassis!

Even Renault galvanize their chassis so what were TVR thinking!

NSurely a company that charges for their cars could use decent steel? But that doesn't even look like its been PAINTED!

Sorry thats happened to the chassis - but at least you found it - not much consolation though is it?

TVR powdercoated the chassis and most models from 96 and earlier are still in 1 piece.
In 97 or thereabouts TVR changed to a cheaper powdercoater and the quality was poor.
Ins very common that the powdercoating is too easily worn away on the outriggers particularly near the wheels and the rot sets in. Also some of the welding isnt the best and can be porous letting in enough moisture to rust from the inside.

My car is a '98 and is the worst case i have seen.
A couple of companys can do outrigger replacements with a 2" bodylift and charge from £1500 but i aim to do a proper job of the whole chassis for a fraction of the price.
I decided to completely strip my chassis and it will be in an engineering workshop soon having any rotten parts replaced.
I may get it galvanized but a decent paint job with products such as rustbullet or POR15 should make a beeter job than TVR did 12 years ago.
With new bushes, suspension, brakes etc and the engine rebuild the car should be better than new.
Im also thinking it will deserve a full respray to finish it off :D

Ive also got still to do a full engine rebuild.

The aim is to be at York to defend my Hotrod challenge title in Easter.
Wish me luck!

The rules and the name have changed to the 'Heads Up Racing Challenge' for 2010 so hopefully more 'normal' road cars will enter and join in the fun. I reckon anyone running 13's or better can be competetive but all will have fun.
There are a few 9 second cars that show but didnt get to every meet and arent always 100% reliable thankfully.
Its fantastic to race alongside them and i cant wait to do it all again

Anyone else giggle slightly at the irony of the numberplate? "R OTT" ??

However, that is quite shocking and never thought a chassis would go like that after just 11 years.

Look lovely mate!!
I wonder just how close to a MGB shell that chassis would fit???

I suppose to buy a new one is a gazillion dollars eh??

It's essentially a brand new car isn't it? With the original shell & running gear in. Should make sure it lasts a lot longer into the future now though, whilst other trevors rot away underneath the plastic.

i still cant believe they rot as much, my old kitcar only had a coat of redoxide and a few coats of hammeright and lasted for over 17yrs
when i sold it the chassis still wasnt showing any major rust

its all coming back together is the important thing
whats this about a york meet? interesting, they have grippy launch surfaces dont they? :)

The original aim was to be at all of Yorks meets this year but as you can see its not going to be ready in time :(

I will be organising a TVR shootout for the 7/8th August however which should give plenty of tracktime as their is another event close by. The weekend is open to RWYB so it may be a good opportunity for any guys on here to come along and play.

Thanks Trev,
take no notice of the pipes and splitters in the pic. I was just having a think.

I will try and get the 'secondary' pipes to 2" as instructed.
I am also planning to make mounting plates to hold everything in place and to route the pipes straight as possible to the splitters IYSWIM.
I will put a pic up when i have something mocked up

Trial body fit to run some checks. Also wiped down with a damp rag. 18 months in a dusty garage/ workshop had took its toll

Went to a straightliners event at RAF Odiham yesterday and was fortunate to drive a fellow Pistonheaders Chimaera 500. Ran a 12.9. I felt very out of practice and could barely reach the pedals but had fun. Soon be in mine :)
