Im looking for board members opinions on after market gauges, in particular which gauge would be most useful, apart from nitrous pressure gauge, e.g. EGT gauge, fuel pressure, AFR,etc etc.

I had autometer which were fine for the money but I finally bought what I wanted in the first place which were Defi. The Defi's are expensive but they are also worth the added money in my opinion.

Fuel pressure gauge. You know when the engine is warmed up properly when the fuel pressure gauge settles back to the proper pressure at tick over.

1.Oil pressure.
2.Oil pressure.
3.Oil pressure.
Those are the important ones.
Then comes the others;
4.Fuel pressure (ALWAYS use an isolated fuel guage, NEVER a direct one)
5.Volts (Every bit as good as the old "ammeters" but without losing charge amperage)
6.Oil temp (see when its up, and when the pressure guage is actually right)
7.EGT (Only for peace of mind)

Stevie, what the hell is going on with your fuel pressure ? Is is something peculiar to Toyota auto's or something ?

on start up in the cold the fuel pressure will go up to 40 PSI on tick over when the engine is fully warmed the pressure goes back down to 35 PSI on tick over.

I have a digital fuel pressure gauge on order, an oil pressure gauge would probably been a better choice, whats the bet the gauge picks up interference and gives crazy readings, I had thought about an EGT gauge but according to what Ive read the readings from the probe are after the event so not much good as a warning device?

Ah for the good old days when all cars (near enough) had oil gauges. A gauge tells you whats going on and gives you time to act, in most modern vars now a little red lights flickers on acussingly as if to say "you fuked me up boyo" before you lose all power!

P.S. I'm with loopy on the oil gauges No fuel no fun, no OIL no ENGINE!
We use stanson acelgauges, I dunno if there still in production ( the ones on the Fordson are from 1964) they seem to be preety good and not bad to look at.

The problem with EGT's on our cars is we tend to run one in the collector which is a fair way from the engine, so yes its after the event and yes its too far away for an accurate reading and it can be influenced by simple ignition timing changes
BUT
Apart from instant failures like a fuel pump fuse blowing a "leaning off" or just something wrong will still show on the guage and once you know how your car reads is a pretty good guide to how happy it is.
Comparing numbers is pretty pointless though, it has to be read after setting up to find out what temps your combination runs at.
