Hi All,

Second Question... i have a 600bhp Subaru Impreza which i did run NGK Racing Spark Plugs in but due to the aggressive cams etc.. they would foul sort of every 6 months and for the price they cost (£100+) i had to look for an alternative.. i then found NGK BCR8ES spark plugs which are another plug with a heat rating of 8 but for peanuts. as they are the older style.. so £8 for a set of 4 which is a bargain.. tested on dyno etc. all ok.

Now my question is has anyone tried these with nitrous? should i go back to racing 8's with nos? or go colder to a 9? i am only going to be using nitrous to spool the turbo i have, not top end. or at least i dont plan to just yet.

your help is much appreciated.

Thanks

I use NGK B8ECS on my MGB with nitrous. Cheap as chips and they work just fine. And I think they are better for heavy use than the BCR8ES plugs for heavy use.

I'm not bothered about using resistor plugs on my car as its track only these days.

600hp from a 4 pot is great. I only make 600hp with 8 cylinders on my 20 year old Rover V8 !!

If your old plugs were fouling, what were they fouling with? Soot, oily crud or crusty scale ??
Why would the cams cause plug fouling? If the plugs foul it normally means they are the wrong heat range or you have other products getting onto the plugs which should not be there like oil residue or antifreeze ?

Sounds like a mental Scooby mate 8)

I bet its a real weapon on the drag strip

Regards
Perry

For your application you won't need to do anything with whatever plugs work on turbo alone.

Cheers guys. I will check them plugs out. As for the fouling.. im not sure.. could be the map/mapper..i changed the plugs and mapper at same time so not sure. Think it may be the lumpy cams /idle makin it run rich on local driving and no boost cleaning them up.. or could just have been the short journeys.. ill get some pics up for you of the car..

Sounds logical with low rpm driving off boost I guess.

whats the difference between NGK B8ECS over the NGK BCR8ES as the ones you mentioned. Not much is recorded over the forums im searching and google., is it worth me defo switching?

p.s. i just checked my pms from old mapper when i asked about this, and found what he wrote.

"The closed loop fueling down low is probably around -5 % corrections max .

The car has a serious lack of vac on idle and is very lumpy so closed loop fueling at idle was a no go for me .

Just on another note also another car mapped by someone else does the exact same ,
we tested the car on a four gas analyzer and the outcome was alot of unburnt carbon deposit on the same cams at idle obv not a very good burn . It was suggested to use pfr7b as a daily . but obv not fro track use"

The differences in the plugs is worth having for more sustained nitrous use (if you can get them);
1) The lack of a resistor results in more spark energy (but may result in interference if you have any sensitive electronics)
2) The shorter ground electrode means its less likely to overheat and melt.

In that case they wouldn't be suitable.

If you look up the plug specs on the google or NGK website etc you will see that they both have 14mm thread with 19mm length. The ECS has a cut back earth strap and is 21mm hex where the resistor plug has a 16mm hex and a full length earth strap.

Its more a case of... Is the hole around the spark plug big enough to take the socket required for the 21mm hex ?? If you shop around you will find the plugs for about £3 each. But stick to NGK if you can as they are really good IMO.

It's always been the case in my experience Perry, that if a plug has a small hex, it's because that's all that will fit in the hole, so I'd expect that to be the case here, unfortunately.

Time for the angle grinder to come out Trev !! :D :D

Or just follow the tips in the book and trim the earth strap back if required ;)
