From what I have read, in some nitrous applications it is advised to retard the timing. How would you set about doing this on modern engine management without a remap?

Not easy in general but if you're lucky either the ECU will have a low octane option or a plug type connector that allows you to switch between fuels. If you have either just select the low octane option, as that will retard the timing and ideally rig up a switch over arrangement, that only activates when you activate the nitrous.

unfortunately I don`t think my ecu has that option, its quite a basic management system. (bosch m3.8.3)
I have heard of timing retard boxes, I have seen you can make them yourself but not keen on the "fool the ECU" type trick.
do any of your controllers have any option for it trev?
im thinking of making a purchase soon, I`ll have to sell up my other hobby/s which I haven't looked at for ages lol.

I believe we're just about to start offering a unit that can retard the timing (and other stuff) but I'll have to check with one of my team to be sure.
Failing that, adding a progressive controller reduces the need to retard the timing by a good deal, so as long as you have one of those, you should be OK up to at least 50 HP with standard timing, as long as you set a modest start percentage & run a decent build time.
