Hi
Umm there is a slight problem with Nitrous Oxide Supplies bottles in my experience ...
The bottles with the blow off valve angled 45 degrees downwards CANNOT have an SPRV fitted.... I am pretty sure I am correct, but check with Trev or Ant first....
Both the bottles that blew those silly valves out which I was filling for local lads did NOT have Sprvs and one of them rang WON to get one for me to fit and he was told they will NOT fit....
I even had to fit new blow off valves for them (I hated doing that as they are such rubbish technology, straight out of the ark )
So worth checking first.....
All the best Brett
In relation to our 5lb and 11lb cylinder burst discs.
A full nitrous oxide cylinder at its "standard chemical measurement" of 20 oC and filled to its intended weight (for example 11lb.) should have a pressure of roughly 50bar; this is then obviously elevated via bottle heaters etc for a run.
Our blow-off discs are rated to 190bar with the cylinder test pressure being up at 250bar, this is obviously to give a good safety margin between the two, which should still not be anywhere near a bottle heaters intended (85bar?) or any possibility of further accidentally increased pressure.
So, the three main reasons for a disc rupturing can only really be...
1) A true accident, such as if your cylinder is left in a car in summer and it gets too hot.
2) A bottle blanket is left on without a auto-switch off facility
3) Overfilling, as vapour pressure then can become hydraulic pressure which ain't great!
A disk is rated as such mainly to save catastrophic failure of the cylinder, but with the margin from standard pressure (50bar) to "run temp" (85bar) being over twice the required amount on the blow off disc alone (190bar) this should be more than enough without ever going near the point of cylinder or disc failure.
They are an “all or nothing” fail safe, I do take your points Brett, they are crude yes, “old hat” yes, but safe? Without a doubt, if there were something better available, the cylinder gas industry as a whole would have it in place.
I am by no means non-agreeable with the WON SPRV, but I just wanted to add a little detail to the discs we have on our cylinders.
